XROMM animation

Rib kinematics & intercostal muscle strain during breathing in Iguana iguana

XROMM animation of sternal ribs 1 and 2, vertebrae and sternum (motion during heavy breathing after exercise). The playback speed is double the real speed of breathing. The motion of the dorsal, osseous portion of each rib is reconstructed as one rigid object and the ventral, cartilaginous portion (green) is reconstructed as a separate rigid object. We found that the dorsal and ventral portions move as rigid bodies, but flex relative to each other with the motion concentrated in one part of the cartilage (shown as a gap in this animation).
